SK: Our mission at Too Good To Go is to inspire and empower everyone to join the fight against food waste. We are a social impact company with the ambition to move the global conversation around food waste to the point where everyone is aware of its importance in fighting the climate crisis. Our immediate focus is to partner with as many businesses that produce or sell food to make sure nothing is wasted at their establishments and they are a zero waste operation.
How does Too Good to Go address food waste?
SK: At Too Good to Go, we are addressing food waste through helping local partners sell their surplus food to customers, via our free smartphone app. Anyone with the app is able to purchase a “Surprise Bag” of food at one-third of its retail price. Since our launch in Canada last year, we have saved more than 280,000 meals. Inspiring people to take action through changing their consumption habits is essential to address food waste globally, and we provide Canadians a simple tool to join the fight and help reduce food waste.
How can food & beverage processors partner with Too Good To Go?
SK: Partnering with Too Good To Go is a very simple process that comes with many benefits. The easiest way to reach out is to go to our website (www.toogoodtogo.ca) and under the “Business” tab, complete a few simple fields and our partnership team will be in touch! We are welcoming any food business that has surplus food to save, from international chains down to small bakeries and corner stores to join our movement and help reduce their food waste while driving incremental revenue and traffic to their stores!
Why is it important to tackle food waste?
SK: Food waste has a strong negative climate, social and economic impact. It accounts for 10 per cent of carbon emissions in the world. Fighting against it is one of the most impactful and simplest actions we can take to reduce global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. We all have an important responsibility here, and our goal is to provide the tools for everyone to join and help make a difference.
How large a problem is food waste in Canada?
SK: Fifty-eight per cent of all food produced in Canada is wasted, which represents 35.5 million tons each year (a significantly higher share than the global average of 40 per cent). It’s something that we need to address as quickly as possible, and in doing so, we can legitimately be optimistic since 94 per cent of Canadians have stated they are motivated to reduce their food waste. They just need the tools to do it, and that is what we are working hard to provide and be a part of the solution.
